We were introduced to the owners of the Stradella residence through our clients at the Bridge House garden, and their shared journey of building homes at the same time created a friendly rivalry to see who would finish first. The Stradella folks finished construction first and won the bet!

Set on several acres high above Bel Air, the property offers panoramic views of the Los Angeles Basin. At the narrow end of the pie-shaped site, we designed an arrival court that feels expansive, blending seamlessly with the neighboring properties by incorporating the same Jacaranda trees. These trees, both from the neighboring sites and our own installation, mingle to create a harmonious sense of continuity—a concept inspired by the Japanese garden principle of shakkei, or “borrowed landscape,” which visually extends the space beyond its borders. The arrival garden responds to the curving architecture and reflective pool, with a radial pattern of plants and paving.

At the broader end of the property, a multi-level swimming pool and terraces are nestled into the hillside to take full advantage of the unobstructed views. Below, on the hillside overlooking the Stone Canyon Reservoir, we planted a grove of olive and fruit trees. Meandering paths wind through the hillside landscape, connecting seating areas, an orchard, and a vegetable garden. In summer, the garden bursts with the fragrant aromas of rosemary, rock rose, lavender, fig, juniper, myrtle, and roses that recalls the famous maquis of Corsica. To complete the experience, guests can ride a funicular back up to the top of the hill, offering a unique perspective of the entire property.
