KAPINOS
This landscape surrounds a unique steel framed home for a busy family in Pacific Palisades. SBLA collaborated with the owners to provide a series of garden spaces that reflect the wide variety of uses of this family. It was important for us to create a sense of mystery and surprise for guests, so we placed a grove of old olive trees between the house and the street. Guests walk along a path that weaves through these trees, an organic counterpoint to the formal geometry of the house, which is revealed at a clearing at the end of the path.
We took advantage of the sloping site to position each garden room on its own terrace that has been carved into the slope. An outdoor lounge with a fire pit is set between two Crepe Myrtle trees and overlooks the swimming pool terrace. Below that is a lawn terrace for family events. The owners were interested in growing their own food and we developed a fruit tree orchard, organic vegetable gardens and cascading berry patches. A wooden yoga platform is located off of the master suite and is surrounded by lush, shade planting. We experimented with new plant materials and were encouraged by the adventurous owners to develop unique paving, railing and screening enclosures.
