Oak Pass

SBLA was engaged to develop the gardens and courtyards surrounding this new home for a young couple. We developed an elegant processional stair that guides guests from the motor court down, through the garden to the house. The grade change is substantial, so we integrated a tiered water feature with the stair for its calming sound and to reflect the sunlight. Southern California canyon’s can be quite dark, so we brightened the space with planting that’s layered with a mix of textures, colors and scents – materials from California, Australia and the Canary Islands.

We wanted to make the most of the open expanse of the courtyard created by the hillside and architecture. A custom-designed fire feature with built-in seating anchors one corner of the courtyard. Adjacent to that we designed a sunken outdoor kitchen that’s concealed from view, along with a big bar suitable for entertaining large gatherings.

Inside the house we designed courtyards and roof terraces that brings the warmth of landscape to soften the lines of the architecture. It’s an informal and elegant landscape that perfectly reflects the
owners refined style.
