Brea Medical Campus
This project was completed for a major biomedical research company outside of Los Angeles. It was created while at Pamela Burton and Company as Director of Design. We collaborated with Gensler Architects to develop a sustainable campus master plan that facilitates better connectivity between the 34 acres of parking lots and research, office and amenity buildings. We began with the experience of the employees who typically arrives by car. We created a parking garden with trees placed between the parking spaces to provide much needed shade and to reduce the heat island effect. Bioswales were installed to provide rainwater infiltration.
At the center of the campus we created a park with a meandering walkway that links new activities for employees such as bocce ball, a giant chess board, sports courts and an amphitheater with seating for corporate events. New outdoor dining spaces and different sized seating areas were established to foster camaraderie between employees. The planting palette utilizes drought tolerant California natives as well as Mediterranean materials that have greatly reduced the amount of water used.
